Mortier Organs in Honesdale, Pa.
By Ben Gottfried
I have made a short video of a rather stunning Mortier 84-key organ
that is due for some repairs. Here is a link: http://youtu.be/awuxmlVyx_A
I will be rebuilding the pump and main valve chest for starters, as
most of the problems are in these two units. The organ is located at
Crankers Collection of Mechanical Marvels in Honesdale, Pa., where they
have a nice collection of vintage cars and some mechanical musical
marvels.
The 84-key Mortier is the smallest of three Mortier organs at the
museum. The other two do not work at all. One is a large art deco
cafe organ that has been partially restored. The other is a monster
organ with a huge fairground façade that is completely unrestored.
They also have a very early large Verbeeck organ which looks to be from
1880 or so and was apparently steam powered at one time! It's in rough
shape though and appears to have been stored in a high-moisture area
for quite some time.
I'll post another video of the 84-key Mortier once I get it back
playing with some dignity.
