I couldn't walk away from this poor soul, Larry Schuette, with the
early (pigeon hole) Kimball player he seeks advice on restoring in the
120927 MMD. I have restored at least a half dozen of these beasts and
my sincere advice is to find another player to rebuild, even another
Kimball, and send this one to Kimball heaven (wherever that is).
These pianos were almost a trial run for Kimball, and even if you're
the very best restorer, the player is no prize. I often wonder whether
these were any good back in the day. Even with the player as tight as
can be, the action is sloppy, with no real resistance from the pedals
because of the use of straps to connect the bellows to the pedals.
You must remove the entire keybed from the piano and remove the pump
assembly as a whole. Since the bed is laced with channels, you have to
shellac-seal everything by pouring it into the channel networks.
As neat as some of these old Kimballs may appear to be, they aren't!
