Can you help with a somewhat complex problem that I have encountered
with a Weber (British) Model 12 Pedal Electric Duo Art grand? The
piano was virtually untouched when I acquired it, apart from one thing
-- the piano action. At some time in the late 1970s the piano hammers
were replaced with a set of Renner Red standard hammers; other aspects
of the work done at that time (probably by an amateur) are substandard.
It seems that they probably should have ordered a special set i.e.
total length and striking point to centre of boring. It is unclear if
the hammer and bore length is right, but I suspect that it is not. It
seems that a stock set of hammers was purchased. The quality of the
rest of the work on the action is also suspect!
The piano is a late Model 12 Weber (serial number 81856) as it has the
stack that fits between the keys and the wrest plank. Earlier Model
12s had the standard Aeolian player action with the stack underneath
the key bed.
The piano action has an extra lever between the keys capstan and the
normal grand whippen. This is a compensation lever and contains a
spring, to adjust via a screw in the back, that adjusts the touch
weight for the player action.
I wonder if anybody has access to or is rebuilding the same model and
can give me the following measurements:
(a) total length of each hammer at the bottom and top of each section,
(b) then the distance from the centre of the boring to the top of the
hammer, i.e., the striking point.
The action has the following breaks: Bass 28, Tenor 21, Middle 19,
Treble 20, equals total 88 notes.
The instrument I am working on has an action by a Leipzig company,
but it is difficult to read the rest. It is "??????" and what looks
like "Morganstern". Schwander also made actions for this model and
I understand that Aeolian commissioned this design of action from
other manufacturers.
I would be interested to be in contact with Model 12 owners who have
the late model with the stack between the keys and wrest plank, so that
some comparison and measurements can be checked. Further measurements
of the present hammers and photographs of the action are available on
request.
