I have been experimenting with listening to 88-note MIDI files on my
LX solenoid piano. Even good rolls are pretty difficult listening with
no expression as you would get controlling a foot pumper.
A few years ago, I wrote a "Virtual Pianola" program that lets you play
a MIDI file and vary the dynamics and tempo while playing. It uses a
Logitec Gamepad (joystick) for control while playing. I am not a very
good pianola operator but even I can get better results than just fixed
loudness.
It is possible, with a little fancy setup, to both play on either
a computer or any MIDI device and also record at the same time so as
to make a file that can later be played with expression.
It is really sad that most people who hear piano rolls played as MIDI
files hear them without expression and probably think that are all
terrible.
I would love to hear from some experienced pianolists who would like to
try adding expression via this method. It is a lot faster than trying
to do it in Cakewalk, although some touching up after the fact will
probably be needed. If there is much interest, I will consider
improving the program to make it more accurate and easier to use.
