Dear Friends, For an ongoing research project I am seeking detailed
data, good quality photos, and audio recording(s) of cylinder music
boxes attributed to Alphonse Malignon. His boxes are usually keywind
type with brass bedplates and red stained case interior, made between
about 1842 and 1853. The phrase "A. Malignon à Genève" is usually
stamped at left rear corner of bedplate along with a 4-digit serial
number.
Anyone who has or knows the whereabouts of any Malignon music box(es)
please contact me by private email. I would like to have the following
details:
- serial number
- gamme number (usually scribed on left cylinder end-cap and/or
lowest bass tooth lead resonator)
- cylinder length
- number of tunes
- photo of program card (if still attached)
- program list (tune titles)
- format of mechanism (bells, drum, mandoline, forte-piano, etc.)
- provenance, if known
- any visible stampings, markings, cartouches on bedplate or
elsewhere on mechanism
- present overall condition (any broken teeth, tips, etc.)
- owner comments appreciated
As many of you know, Mr. Olin Tillotson published a limited edition,
"Tribute to Alphonse Malignon," about 14 years ago, and I am attempting
to update his data with more recently discovered examples of this
maker's music boxes. Also, we would like to update and improve the
photo quality where possible for some of the earlier data which may
have been black and white and/or low resolution images. Any and all
responses will be much appreciated.
