Occasional postings in MMD lament the fact that words have not been
part of recut 88-note player piano rolls. I believe the last 88-note
word roll recut product was the green box MelODee rolls in the 1960s.
That has finally changed, as I have just received my order of rolls
from Keystone Music Rolls, and they are absolutely terrific. With
little fanfare, Richard Groman built a word roll system to accompany
his perforators, borrowed a large groups of rolls from collectors,
scanned and recut them.
The result is one of the best 88-note recut products I have seen.
The rolls are flawlessly produced on Keystone perforators with wide,
true perforations. The words are solidly printed, not with dot-matrix,
and line up with the music. The boxes are strong with good labels,
each stating all the information from the original label.
Even better, the roll selections are mostly snappy rags, blues,
one-steps, and fox trots from the late 'teens and '20s. Some were
previously recut in the 1970s, but even though I have a substantial
roll collection, I found these to be highly desirable and a remarkable
set of rolls.
Keystone usually markets their Ampico and Duo-Art rolls through the
Kennard's of Magic Melodies in Jamestown, Kentucky, but for the
present, at least, these are available directly from Richard Groman
at Keystone Music Rolls, PO Box 650, Bethlehem, PA 18016, email
rfg2@ptd.net.geentroep [delete ".geentroep" to reply]. Keystone does
not have a web site for these but Richard can send you a sheet with
pictures of all the labels he has in stock.
I have no interest in this venture, but as a piano roll collector and
recut buyer, I want to support one of the better recut suppliers in
decades.
