Seek Duo-Art Organ Roll 3613 "Symphony No. 6"
By Bob Taylor
My quest to obtain all of the titles within the Duo-Art organ roll
library has not made much progress lately. Some of the missing titles
are not very interesting so I don't get too excited about them, but
others I have a great passion for.
The Tchaikowsky "Symphony No. 6" is issued on five rolls. I am missing
one of those rolls, number 3613, which is the 3rd movement. If anyone
on the list has this roll for sale, please contact me. A second option
would be to let me borrow the roll so that I may scan it into my MIDI
files.
The 116-note version of this composition is the arranging work of
Wallace Goodrich. The Duo Art version, 176-note, is apparently derived
from the 116-note format, but that should not be treated lightly. Many
titles that exist in both formats show a very high level of artist
talent in the "arranged" 176-note Duo Art rolls.
Often collectors refer to the Duo-Art rolls in this category as just
having the stops added. This is not true. Side by side comparisons
show the note fields on many of these "twin" roll titles to be different.
Additionally, the latest hand-played Duo-Art rolls also show up as the
latest 116-note rolls, giving rise to the conclusion that some 116-note
rolls are indeed hand-played and derived from the Duo-Art recording.
The Tchaikowsky Symphony No. 6 is a marvelous work and shows off the
Aeolian organ's orchestral capabilities. Here's hoping this post will
lead me to that missing roll.
