Tune Your Piano Before Presenting It On YouTube
By Jim Katz

I fear you are preaching to the choir here: most MMD readers will know
that, at the very least, they are going to hear about it from others
on the list if they post inferior videos. I think the worst of the
'offenders' are just folks who have happened on a playing instrument
while traveling and want to share this marvel with others. Their
videos are often as shaky as the instruments sound, but I look anyhow
-- it is fun hear different instruments, and see them through new eyes
as well. As for the sound, the fact is, mostly I am going to listen
only through my laptop's speakers anyhow when I just happen on a
posting, and an iPhone mic is up to that.

On the other hand, I had the pleasure of attending the annual AMICA
get-together a while back, and for the first time heard all those
instruments tuned and polished to better-than-original perfection. It
was an eye and ear-opener and gave me a new respect for the prowess of
the makers, and the devotion of the current technicians and hobbyists.

So my bottom line is that I would rather people post than not, and
would rather hear anything from an instrument (unless it is the sad
'obnoxious horn machine') that I might otherwise never get to see and
hear.
