Attending conventions is always fun. Most attendees leave with renewed
interest in the hobby. The AMICA convention in Pittsburgh went off
without a hitch and thus the planners need a few congratulatory remarks.
But something very special happened in Pittsburgh -- let me explain.
During the 1970's, the AMICA membership secretary was a delightful,
energetic woman named Anita Nichols Johnson. She was the first
correspondent to many of us when we joined AMICA. From her home in
Grand Junction, Colorado, she learned who we were, and warmly greeted
us as we eventually met at the conventions in those days.
I hadn't seen Anita in several years, but there she was in Pittsburgh.
Little did I know that she is a native of the steel city. When she
gave comments on the bus public address system as we approached the
University of Pittsburgh, it was indeed a special treat. Later as we
entered the main campus building, she exclaimed it really hadn't changed
since she was a student there.
So it was a home coming event for Anita, and she was radiant. It was
fun being with her. And at age 87, she looked good on the dance floor
at the Saturday night banquet.
Being with Anita, who clearly was enjoying Pittsburgh, made this a very
special convention.
