Modern Duo/Art Player Won't Play Duo-Art Rolls
By Bob Hodge
You're right! It's a "Duo Art" in name only -- the instrument wasn't
meant to play the original "Duo-Art" reproducing piano rolls, and so
just as soon as one of the expression holes in the roll that was meant
to control the dynamics of the reproducing piano finds the reroll hole
on your customers tracker bar, it throws the piano into rewind. It's
just not a compatible [tracker bar] format.
The player pianos of the 1960s, '70s and '80s were never (as far as
I know) designed to play reproducing rolls, just regular player piano
rolls which don't have the special holes that reproducing rolls have.
Reproducing rolls also have a reroll hole in them, but it's in a
different location.
As long as they are in good condition, I like to use "Imperial"
player piano rolls because they have fine arrangements and will give
your customer's player a chance to really sound off (no pun intended).
They are musically head and shoulders beyond the "Duo/Art" and "Aeolian"
player rolls that would be the same vintage as your customer's piano.
Unless of course your customer likes that era's music!
