Regarding the question by Duaine Hechler about the leaking Ampico
take-up spool, the answer is this. The appearance of the end of the
spool is a bearing but underneath the bearing is a packing of leather
punchings. To replace the leather punchings pry out the bearing and
then make new leather punchings with an I.D. that is snug around the
spool spindle. The packing is designed so that the bearing ends up
flush with the end of the spool.
Some people use a Teflon insert in the end of the Ampico spool that
Bob Streicher sells to replace the bearing and leather seals. I've
never found the need as I've always had good luck with original design
and, hey, it's fun to fix stuff and leave it original.
Oh, when you put on the new assembly you will need to lubricate it.
Make sure you don't force grease into the end of the spring-loaded
nipple, which would close off the signal. Pack the bearing with some
grease and then put some grease on the outside on the spring-loaded
nipple behind the little hole at the end and you should have a nice
seal now. You can also rub a little grease into the punching leathers
if you like.
Hope this helps,
