Passing of John Duffy of Duffy Player Pianos
By Hi Babit
I just read of the passing of John Duffy who had Duffy's Player
Pianos business in Palisades Park, New Jersey. I did piano tuning
work for Duffy and he also recommended piano tuning clients to me.
When I got the job to play at Donaghy's Steak House in The Bronx, New
York, I bought a player piano and an XTP Hammond organ to use at the
steak house. I played there for about 18 years. Arthur Marino also
worked there and he is currently doing work here in Florida. Arthur
lives in Sunrise and I meet with him once in a while.
I think I still have a photo taken in Duffy's place that was printed
in an article in the New York Daily News Sunday section about the year
1962. I remember the year, because in the following June of 1963
I started working for QRS in The Bronx. The newspaper article had the
name of Imperial Industries and I remembered it when I read the wanted
ad for a pianist-arranger. I answered it to find out how they made
piano rolls, and I ended up working for them. Nice memories!
