Rebuilding a Pratt-Read Player Piano Action
By Pete Knobloch
Hi Clinton, You have definitely found the valves for the Pratt-Read
player. The paper you talk about is thin zephyr skin. If you remove
one of the values you can easily test the pouch by closing the bleed
hole with your finger and using your mouth to apply a vacuum on the
nipple on the side of the block. It should be fairly air tight as
long as the bugs haven't eaten holes in the leather.
Try not to mix up the round valves since there may be some size
difference for each valve well and/or valve leather thickness. Check
that all of pouch leather doesn't have holes in it.
At this point, it might be best to focus your attention to the key
pneumatics rather than the valves. If the pneumatic cloth is leaky
and stiff, this definitely needs replacing. You can always come back
to the valves later if new leather is needed.
