Hi all, The Manualo Saga continues; hope I'm not boring y'all.
Today I got around to cleaning the wood of the old glue. This must
be some hot melt glue or other plastic stuff, because sanding it warms
it up and it balls up. I had to resort to using a scraper and then
sanding. I think I finally have all the glue off and am now ready to
start the recovering.
Tonight I'll put on the hinge cloth and let it dry overnight so
I don't accidentally strain the glue joints. The hinge cloth was done
with hide glue, so I'm certain they were the originals, which would
explain the hinge failure. The guy that rebuilt this piano has
passed on, and I think this was the only one he did, although the
cloth trimming suggests someone with experience. Maybe he was an
engineer! :)
I hope the museum appreciates this job -- I ain't makin' no money
doin' it!
Have a great weekend!
