In response to Bob Hodges' request for information on a 1939 "A" roll
-- the roll is Clark 1518 from 1939, with the following songs:

Play-Rite (Play-Rite, Ray Siou, Paule Gottschalk) and Don Rand recut
this roll. Steve Cobb sells Don Rand's roll and this is your best bet
to obtain a copy.

Compiling the database information was accomplished by referring to roll
catalogs, advertisements, listings in the Music Trade Review and Presto
magazines, and, as last resort, the labels on recut rolls. In addition,
an extensive list was compiled by Art Reblitz and Alan Lightcap. Ragtime
information is from Jasen. The information for this roll (1518) was
obtained from Lightcap. Information about recuts was obtained from the
recut catalogs or the rolls themselves as they turn up.

Composer information was more difficult to obtain. In general, the
songs presented on rolls are composed shortly before the roll is
distributed. Therefore I look for the most contemporaneously composed
entries. Sources are the Catalog of Copyright Entries, the Encyclopedia
of Popular Music, various sheet music price guides and university music
library listings on the web. This of course, is no guarantee that the
composer and year are correct, but it is generally a fairly good
approach.

There is not much performer information. The Columbia/Capitol roll
information is from Mike Montgomery, and I believe the information for
this roll was from Art Reblitz. It would be useful to try to fill in
the performer information, but this would take someone with knowledge
of the 88 note QRS masters.

Matt Jaro

[ I added the probable QRS roll numbers in brackets; the QRS data is
[ from The Billings Rollography, Vol. 4. -- Robbie
