An MMDer pointed out the limits of DVDs -- they do not play at 1080p,
but rather they are 720 x 480 pixels. I knew that, but just didn't
think about it. I apologize for my error.

[ The number listed in the common TV resolutions of 1080p, 720p, and
[ 480i refer to the number of horizontal scan lines. The number
[ of vertical lines turns out to be a larger number at the ratio
[ of 4:3 or 16:9 depending on the aspect ratio of the source material
[ and/or display. The suffix letter refers to whether the input to the
[ display is interlaced or not.
[
[ Standard DVDs can support resolutions up to 720x480 pixels at 29.79
[ frames/second interlaced. This corresponds to "480i" resolution.

[ This preceptually much better than VHS tape and "upscales" to 720p
[ displays so well that a lot of people won't notice or care that it
[ isn't really 720p source material. -- Jody
