Not quite Chinese, but in that general part of the world were the
standard 88-note rolls that Yamaha made in the 1920s to go with their
pneumatic player pianos (which are strangely absent from the company's
corporate history on its web page).
Some of these rolls were at least of Japanese tunes: the recent PPG
bulletin illustrated the couple that Mike Boyd has, with translations
made by Japanese enthusiast Hiroshi Matsuura, whose parents run the
Mechanical Instrument Music Museum in Kobe which possesses a couple
more of these rolls ( http://www.orgel-horie.or.jp/main/ ).
The pieces Mike has were contemporary Japanese works, "Yugure"
(Nightfall) by Ryukichi Sawada and "Kisen" (the name of a Buddhist
monk) by Kazuoki Miyoshi (both composer's names given here in western
style, surname last). The museum's rolls were of traditional Japanese
music.
