We have a Swiss cylinder music box that plays Chinese tunes. It has
a 12-note reed organ section, but it has no tune sheet. The music
sounds to me much like the Western-style Japanese music that was
arranged and produced on new 15-1/2-inch discs by Kazuo Tashiro in
Japan, who died just a few weeks ago. (We have copies of all of his
discs of Japanese music.)
The cylinder music box has a 12-inch cylinder. I can find nothing to
indicate the maker's name, but I am sure it would not be difficult to
discern from the design of the governor mechanism.
If Professor Sheppard wants more information, I can ask one of our
friends from Beijing to identify the tunes, and I can make a recording
but I have nothing to record on except an old cassette tape machine.
Some of the music box collectors in Japan follow the MMD and may
respond to your request. If not, let me know. The members of the
Japanese chapter of the MBSI might be able to help.
