MIDI Files of Modern Piano Music
By Geoff Ward
In MMD 120220 Waldemar Raad suggested that a method of recording piano
rolls as MIDI files would be to play them on a player piano equipped
with a key velocity scanner such as the PNOScan II made by QRS.
I have had the same idea and in fact have purchased a PNOScan II kit
for that purpose. I have not installed the PNOScan in my 88-noter yet
(I think I am waiting to find an upright Ampico for sale and working up
the courage to tell my wife).
Has anyone tried this before? Because the keys are driven by gravity
when a roll is playing, I'm not convinced that the response of the keys
to the roll holes would be all that accurate, particularly in fast
repetitions. I am wondering if this potential problem could be
overcome by slowing the tempo of the playing roll right down and then
editing the resultant MIDI file to increase the tempo again. Any
thoughts on this?
Kind regards,
Geoff Ward
