Modernizing the Ampico Reproducing Piano
By Paul Meehan
I thoroughly enjoy my 1925 Haines Bros. baby grand Ampico. The kids
love it too and it fills the house with music all the time. It's
the best. There is one thing that it lacks and it's something I've
considered in passing from time to time. It lacks the ability to play
"modern" or contemporary songs.
I thought about replacing the whole thing with a newer model that
has the ability to play digital tunes but not having lots of disposable
cash I can't see my way to paying many thousands to replace it. (Plus
it's the same model as the one that occupied my grandmother's house for
so many years and was a treasured item we used every visit. So it has
sentimental value as well. My sister got that one.)
I'm hoping to solicit opinions as to what my options are for adding
a digital playing system to this unit. Ideally I would be able to add
a digital player device to this without removing or interfering with
the Ampico mechanism. I'm hoping MMD subscribers can offer some
sources that I can read or opinions on products that I can implement
to make this instrument even more treasured. I'm pretty confident
I have the skills required. It's a matter of determining what products
are available, the cost, and the time it would take to implement. Any
thoughts would be appreciated.
