Organizing Piano Roll Storage
By John McClelland

Greetings all, Lee Rothrock posed a quandary for storing rolls.
I'm not sure that there is any one good system. I have seen rolls
stored by number, by brand, composer, artist and any combination
thereof. The system I think works the best is to put them up by
composer, regardless of type, manufacturer or system. Although the
boxes end up being different sizes as well as the different systems
(88-note, Duo-Art, etc.), with a master list a roll is quickly located.

I had personal experience locating rolls in two large collections
last year: Denis Condon's collection of approximately 7500 rolls of
all different systems (Duo-Art, Ampico, Welte, Triphonola, Duca & Art
Echo), and Ken Caswell's collection of approximately 650 Welte rolls.
In both instances the roll I was seeking was readily found.

Just make sure you leave a little room for future acquisitions! And be
sure you put it back in the same place when you get through listening,
too.

Good luck,
John McClelland
