Unknown Typeface on Reed Organ Stops
By Joseph Osborne
I have to agree that these were hand done and that they are best
copied with the photo editor approach. I believe that nearly all
of these were made by one company, just as nearly all the reeds were
manufactured by Estey and sold in bulk as far as Chicago. Therefore,
I think you can get a match by using examples from many different
organs.
I am currently working on a Cable (Chicago) organ with only three
out of ten originals remaining. I compared these originals with an
Estey that is all original and found an excellent match. The size of
the typeface varies to fit the word within the area of the knob face.
Non-playing stops, e.g. Forte, coupler, are red.
In the past I have replaced a single missing face with one done with
PhotoShop on card stock on a laser printer (suitably coated to match
gloss and protect from wear). It was not incised but was otherwise
indistinguishable from the originals without careful examination.
I plan to do this entire Cable organ with a PhotoShopped set. I will
leave the originals in the organ so they can be reused if it becomes
possible in the future.
I can get all the images I need with the scans and photos of my Estey.
