Duo-Art Recut of Beethoven Symphony No. 5
By David Goodwin
I have been speaking with Julian Dyer in England about possibly re-
cutting for the Duo-Art the set of rolls of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5
played by Albert Stoessel. This performance uses the transcription
that Franz Liszt wrote for solo piano. It is a four-roll set and would
sell for around $75.00 US.
I would need to find at least three other people who are interested in
them to have these rolls cut. I would be willing to pay to have them
all shipped to the U.S. and then charge only what it would cost to ship
them from Washington (State) to wherever you are in the U.S. Please
email me (ampicoman@comcast.net.geentroep [deleting ".geentroep"]) if
you are interested in this set of rolls.
About this roll performance: Franz Liszt is considered to be probably
the greatest pianist who ever lived. By 1865 he had completed
transcriptions of all nine of Beethoven's symphonies for solo piano.
Symphony No. 5 is the only one that made it onto Duo-Art. Symphonies
1, 3, 4, 6 and 8 were also recorded, but on systems like Duca, Ampico
and Triphonola.
There is a CD recording of all nine symphonies played by Cyprien
Katsaris available on amazon.com if anyone is interested in hearing
these remarkable transcriptions.
