I have, for many years, sold Wayne Stahnke's "Live Performance"
diskettes. It's usually one or two at a time, with an occasional large
order involving 1 each of some or all of the titles. Imagine my surprise
(and suspicion) when I received an inquiry for a price for 100 of one
catalog number! This was to be an order 'picked up by a shipping agent'.
Well, I called another agent -- at the FBI -- and had a most interesting
chat with them. The FBI agent I spoke to confirmed that this was the
standard "Overpayment by cashier's check scam". The FBI agent said the
shipping agent would accompany me to the bank, have me deposit the
cashier's check, and then take the difference in cash. I could expect
that the shipping agent would dispose of the purchased "product" in the
nearest dumpster. To my surprise, the FBI agent was totally uninterested
in trying to set up a "sting" and apprehend the perpetrators. He said
something about their "workload". As the FBI agent's suggestion, I
simply ignored the correspondence.
I have two friends that have almost wired money to England to help out
their friends who's e-mail accounts were hacked and were supposedly
stranded in London.
On the Internet, it never hurts to have your bullshit detector set to
"extra sensitive".
