Mike Kukral was interested in removing a musty smell from a player
piano. One method for eliminating odors is the use of charcoal
briquettes. Several times I have used the method and presently
I had mold under the kitchen sink from a water leak. I use a plate
full of the charcoal chunks placed close to the offending problem.
I had a freezer that the tenant had turned off but forgot about the
hamburger in the compartment. It stayed there for about one month.
I tried scrubbing with everything I could think of, including bleach.
A friend suggested the charcoal and it worked, taking a way the odor
after about a week at room temperature. This might work on the inside
of the piano, but the exterior surface would probably need normal
cleaning for varnished surfaces. A few months later we could not
detect the odor.
Mother's method of eliminating odors was to scorch sugar on a hot
stove burner. It works very well, but takes a while to get rid of
the burnt sugar smell.
