Bruce Grimes wrote, "Give it to a younger AMICAn. That's what
we've planned to do with our pianos and rolls, including the concert
grand Steinway. He doesn't know who he is, yet..."
I am very grateful to have been entrusted this past year with
caregiving responsibilities for a 1917 Weber Duo-Art grand. A couple
bought an estate which had several instruments abandoned around the
property. Being musicians themselves they didn't want to see anything
bad happen to them.
They gave the instrument to me after interviewing me to determine
that I was at least qualified to care about looking after the piece.
I likely wouldn't have found the budget to pay for the initial cost of
an instrument of indeterminate condition, but I can certainly afford
the rebuilding materials and it makes for a great hobby in my spare
time.
The instrument gets a good deal of exposure since I like to throw
dinner parties. People are almost always fascinated that such a thing
could exist. Pre-teen boys who are into making things out of what they
can find in the yard especially love going through how it works!
I just wish I could have taken the organ from the same estate, but a
grand already takes half the living room. If someone were looking for
a Reproduco home, however, I may learn enough carpentry to extend the
house. ;)
