Repairing Mira 18-1/2" Double-Comb Musical Box
By Craig Smith
Mike Cino asks about two things related to the repair of the Mira music
box. The oddly shaped metal contraption over the combs is the mandolin
attachment. Glued under the curved bar is a piece of rolled up tissue
paper.
When the lever pushes the bar forward, the paper touches the top of the
comb and causes a 'buzzy' sound that some people find amusing. It is
sort of neat on a few arrangements but don't leave it in contact with
the comb when your not listening. The paper can get damp from humidity
in the air and cause rust on the top of the combs.
As for the hesitation while playing a disc, it's more likely caused by
the disc or the star-wheels. One of more of the star-wheels could be
stiff or stuck. This could be caused by dirt or grease or a bent tip
on the star-wheel. Alternately, some of the projections on the disc
could be bent such that they catch on a star-wheel as it plays.
