I have been following the thread on edge damage on piano rolls, having
recently read Kurt Morrison's addition. I have been involved in the
business of roll repair and roll sales for some years now, and have
seen an incredible variety of repairs others have made through the
years to their rolls. I am sure the most important thing to anyone is
to repair his roll so that he can play it on his player, but honestly,
I have seen folks repair them with Christmas Seals, Postage stamps,
sewing, safety pins, (yes) duct tape, etc.
I am sure that Mr. Morrison's endorsement of duct tape was in humor,
but I just hope people will consider the person from the next generation,
after the rolls have been passed on down the line, sitting patiently
repairing this incredible piece of history, and just simply use Scotch
Magic Tape, or if they really want to spend the money and believe in
it, use the archival tape (although I don't really see the need for the
extra expense).
The Scotch Magic Tape makes such a good repair, is priced reasonably,
and seems to last for a very long time. Don't use the shiny see-through
tape as it becomes very brittle and flakes off. The duct tape is too
bulky and shrinks up and very hard to deal with.
A lot of these rolls have been around for a century, and we need to
keep them around a lot longer!
