Hi MMD, In response to Lee Rothrock's questions concerning curled
up edges on the roll paper, I wrote a four page paper, "Piano Roll
Restoration," published in the AMICA Bulletin, Sept/Oct 2009. This
article discusses both the cause and the solution to this problem
along with many other piano roll repair solutions.
The problem of curled up edges is not that uncommon. The basic cause
is that throughout the years the left flange has been continuously
pushed further into the core, thus giving the paper insufficient space
between the flanges. To correct this problem pull the left flange out
and put some sort of spacer, O-ring or rubber band on the insert portion
of the flange. This keeps the flange from impinging on the end of the
cardboard tube.
As to the roll paper and the curl up or under simply straighten it out
using a small blade. Then with a hot iron flatten it out and repair
any small tears with Scotch Magic Mending Tape. Hope this helps.
