Edge Damage on Piano Rolls
By Lee Rothrock

I got my hands on a box of rolls which includes one of "Twilight Time",
played by Frank Milne -- a truly delightful song, but with an unusual
problem: the right hand side has several stretches where the edge is
folded over 1/16" to 1/8". They are long enough to cause a change of
key, which we don't see very often.

My first reaction to this particular problem is to roll the thing out
to the bad spots, fold them back to where they should be, and put some
tape on the tears which are naturally at each end of the fold-overs.
I can't help but wonder if someone out there hasn't dealt with this
problem before and come up with a creative and effective method of
dealing with it.

And while we're at it, does anyone have a good guess as to how such
damage occurs? The only thing I can think of is the pianos with the
finger trackers (my term), the ones which depend upon the edge of the
roll to open the tracking valves. But you'd think if that were the
problem, the fold-overs would all be in the same direction. These go
both ways.

While we're at it, I'd be very pleased to hear some opinions on what
tape to use on piano rolls and how to use it. So far, this is what
I've surmised: use Scotch magic tape and only put it on crosswise,
don't apply it to the length of the roll, edgewise, for example. And
to those who will help me with this problem, thanks in advance!
