And herein lies the problem. External links become invalid because
the original posters change provider, delete them or whatever and thus
after just a relatively short time, they are lost. That is the same
as the just links being posted to peoples' responses in the MMD --
the information would be lost. Whilst this was the standard 10 years
ago, it is no longer the norm.

[ Bernt, in your last post I said that I agreed with you. I agree
[ with this post as well. I'm inclined to provide a method to
[ upload photos on the article submission form on the MMD website.
[ I realize that this is less convenient than just attaching them to
[ a piece of e-mail, but the machinery we use for processing the
[ incoming traffic is, I'm afraid, very "old school". It would be
[ easy to provide the links to the uploaded images automatically
[ to the editors. This would also keep the Digest mailings from
[ becoming huge as they would if Digests had imbedded photos.
[ I wish we had a way to address, in general, the issue of external
[ links becoming "stale". There's lots of good stuff posted here that
[ references off-site links. Unfortuantely many of them change or
[ go away with time... --Jody
