Separating Cremona Piano Case
By Wade Newton
I have a circa 1918 Cremona A-roll piano that is needing a new
soundboard and I would like to remove the sides of the case from
the back to facilitate the fitting and clamping of a new soundboard.
This piano experienced serious moisture damage over the years and all
the ribs had detached themselves from the soundboard. The cracked
and very warped soundboard itself pretty much came loose from the
rest of the case on its own. The back posts are coming apart where
they were laminated from smaller boards and it seems that the case
sides are the only thing left that is solidly glued on. I am open to
suggestions and stories of how other rebuilders removed the sides from
pianos. Thanks for any input.

[ I have two Cremonas; in both pianos the pin block has pulled away
[ from the posts. I recommend that new glue be applied to all glue
[ joints, and the pin block should be secured to the posts with
[ carriage bolts. -- Robbie
