Historian Anthony Barnett contacted me several years ago about the
Supertone piano rolls recorded by pianist Henry Crowder, who toured
Europe with violinist Eddie South and his Alabamians jazz band.
He says many tributes to Mike Montgomery have been posted at the Yahoo
Jazz Research forum. His own tribute follows.

Mike Montgomery's generosity, along with that of Frank Himpsl,
Robbie Rhodes and others, enabled the CD accompanying my book,
"Listening for Henry Crowder," to include all six Crowder 1926 piano
rolls, alongside all his known disc recordings. Mike's collection
included the only known original copy of one of the rolls in its
unabbreviated form but it was badly damaged.
Robbie Rhodes and Julian Dyer (who performed the rolls for the CD)
wrote articles for the book explaining the history of the rolls and
the restoration involved. Julian Dyer wrote, "Where the paper had
totally disintegrated the missing parts were reconstructed using an
A-roll transcription provided by Frank Himpsl."
Without this happy collaboration of everyone involved the CD would
have been incomplete. My thanks.
