We have a large collection of music rolls that were my wife's
grandfather's and which she inherited from her father. We also have a
player piano from the same source. The player still works, but it
leaks vacuum and must be pumped rapidly when played.
About a third of the roll collection are QRS rolls from the 50's
through the 70's. The other rolls are much older. These are split
between song rolls of past decades, with words, and classical rolls
without words. A group of Vocalstyle rolls, Minstrel Series 1, 2, and
3, are in the collection.
We also have one Welte Mignon roll. I am not familiar with piano
rolls, but I have checked some sources on this particular Welte roll.
I have been told it is a reproducing roll, on good paper, and the edges
seem to be in good shape. The box has some wear; one of its corners
has a tear. The box label reads: Welte Mignon, No. 1263, Menuet,
Paderewski. Played by Paderewski.
We are trying to determine how we can estimate the value of the roll
collection and whether the piano is worth restoring. If you can
provide any information or guidance we would truly appreciate the
assistance.
