Preserving Audio Fidelity in YouTube Video
By Alan Turner

Marc, I checked the piano and the soft pneumatic has inexplicably
stopped working, but more importantly the audio "automatic gain
control" (AGC) on the recording device is doing its job far too
efficiently, raising the volume of the quiet passages and softening
the louder passages.

My next step, though I am reluctant to do so, is to simultaneously
record the audio on my older 1960's version reel-to-reel tape deck
(fully adjustable and controllable) and then overlay the resulting
audio onto the video clip. Lots of work, but I am sure the resultant
quality will be much better .

Does anyone on MMD (or their associates) know of any more modern
systems (read "direct to digital") that have an audio AGC that can
be disabled or is non-existent?

With what I am doing now the total time from recording to publication
in YouTube is about 20 minutes for a 10-minute clip. Keeping that
time benchmark would be ideal if I want to get many more recordings up.
Any suggestions you and MMD might have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Alan Turner
