As to getting people interested, our people of the Lady Liberty
Chapter of AMICA invite their friends to meetings and events. Many of
the events are not necessarily sponsored by AMICA, but instead may be
a silent movie in a nearby theater, presented on by the local Theater
Organ Society chapter, or COAA rallies or MBSI outings. We also
advertise the Wanamaker Organ Day in Philadelphia and Knoebel's Amusement
Park in Elysburg, Pennsylvania, which has a bi-annual organ rally.
When player pianos become available, which is often, we alert our
members who tell their friends. We have chapter members standing
by to help newcomers rebuild and restore free or nearly free pianos.
Recently the chapter was given 750 piano rolls from a person who
couldn't sell them on e-Bay. We issued him a tax receipt for his
donation and then offered the rolls to our members at the suggested
donation of $1 each. Members and guests had a field day at our last
meeting. Even weeks afterward, people call and come by to that
special roll that someone has overlooked.
Just this afternoon a gentleman came over for some more piano rolls.
He joined AMICA at our last meeting because he was brought by the
chapter member who taught his son how to restore player pianos. At
a recent organ rally where none of the promised organs showed up, we
offered piano rolls to the public at 3 for $1. People with no pianos
bought them and took them home along with old AMICA Bulletins and
membership applications. We also stagger our meetings east and west
of the Hudson and Delaware rivers. Some of our members don't like
crossing rivers, especially the Hudson River, due to high tolls and the
traffic in New York City.
As for those who drop out, we write e-mails, make phone calls and
send letters to those who do not have e-mail. It is surprising how
many drop out simply because they forgot to renew and the renewal
application ended up on the bottom of some pile of "to do sometime"
stack of papers. Even those who drop out are kept informed via e-mail
unless they either die or ask to be taken off of the list. Some have
dropped out only to return a couple years later, thanking us for
keeping them informed. This is easy, but it takes one or two people
who will simply show an interest in those who have a similar interest.
