Player Pianos in the Old West Myth
By Dale C. Wilson

A posting on this subject mentioned "historical accuracy." The
following incident came to mind and made me laugh again. It seems that
today Hollywood has its own take on history.

A TV show called "Wild West Tech" explains how certain inventions and
technological developments came out of the Old West. The episode I
remember had a segment on the player piano, describing it as a device
invented to prevent the musician from meeting a stray bullet in a
barroom brawl. Obviously, the writer of the show had no actual
knowledge of player piano history, not to mention that the first player
pianos had to be foot pumped, leaving the operator in harm's way.
