The Morris Museum (Morristown, New Jersey) is pleased to announce
the publication of an illustrated catalog for its permanent exhibition,
"Musical Machines and Living Dolls: The Murtogh D. Guinness Collection
of Mechanical Musical Instruments and Automata." The 144-page,
hardcover book features 138 photographic images (119 in color) and
over 20 illustrations, and it was written by Ellen M. Snyder-Grenier,
former Curator of the Guinness Collection.
The price is $39.95 each, and copies may be purchased in the Morris
Museum gift shop or by phone. (There is a 7% New Jersey tax where
applicable.) Please add $8.95 for shipping and handling within the
contiguous 48 states, or $40 for orders from outside the US. An order
form may be found at http://www.morrismuseum.org/ on the Museum's
homepage. Please feel free to telephone 1-973-971-3737 with any orders
or enquiries.
By way of background, in 2003 the Morris Museum was awarded the Guinness
Collection of 750 antique, mechanical musical instruments and automata.
A new museum wing was purpose-built with 4,300 square feet of gallery
space and opened in November 2007. The exhibition features more than
150 pieces from the collection and takes visitors on a journey through
the history of on-demand musical entertainment. Live demonstrations of
several of the objects are held daily, Wednesdays through Sundays, at
2 p.m. In addition, we are planning a loan-out exhibition of automata,
about which an announcement will be made later this year.
