Mechanical Music Display in Fremont, CA, 14-15 May
By Dave Corkrum
7th Annual "Music in the Park" at Ardenwood, Fremont, California
The Musical Box Society offers their annual showcase of pre-electric
musical mechanical marvels May 14-15, 2011, in the 19th century
setting of the Ardenwood Historical Farm in Fremont. There'll be
a calliope belching patriotic foot-stompers from gleaming brass pipes.
At the flick of a switch a tiny mechanical bird will burst into
warbling song, swinging its head in time.
A band organ will produce the whole impact of a large human marching
ensemble; a look "backstage" will show various horns and pipes
actually playing, and drum sticks executing smart rolls, all with no
human hand or mouth present.
And in the parlor of the historic Paterson House a handsome machine
will play discs of favorites, the kind of discs that favorites resided
on before the advent of electrons -- using programs carefully punched
out in metal. Kids will have a chance to crank too. Hours: 10 A.M.
to 4 P.M. Free after admission to the park.
