1923 "Centennial" Chickering Ampico Pianos
By Diane deTar
I have serviced several 1923 Chickering Ampico grand pianos in the
past. Many of the owners have commented that there were only 100
"Centennial" models made. Yesterday I looked up the serial number
just to see how many were indeed made in 1923. The Pierce Piano
Atlas states that there were only 100 Chickerings made that year.
This must be a typo. How can there be a few thousand pianos made
in prior years and later years, yet only 100 pianos made during their
centennial year?
If this is true, then how many Chickering Ampicos were made? Did they
only produce Ampico players for the entire year? Or did they limit the
number to only 100 because it was their 100th year in business? Does
this make that year more valuable? This makes for interesting trivia.
