Dear John, Greetings from the Bronx! If I am not mistaken, there
was an instrument called the Baldwin Manualo. Perhaps this is what
the roll was intended for?
The instrument was probably derived from the Welte system (such
as the Welte Licensee), as were a few obscure instruments offered
briefly by Wurlitzer. These systems were probably shelved at the
advent of WW1. As you may or may not recall, the Welte properties
in New York City, The Bronx, and Poughkeepsie, New York, were
confiscated and sold by the Alien Property Custodian.
An interesting instrument was discovered walled up in a Brooklyn
Theatre. At first it appeared to be either a tall-case piano or
orchestrion, but at further examination it turned out to be a fancy
tall-case reproducing piano. The instrument had a multi-roll
changer and a Welte reproducing system. But the biggest oddity of
all was the name on the fallboard -- "Wurlitzer". My take on why
the instrument was walled up, was probably with all the news of the
government attaching alien property, the owners probably feared
that the government was going to seize their instrument.
Another interesting note about this 'Wurlitzer/Welte' hybrid is that
several of the rolls discovered with the instrument were never listed
in any Welte catalogue.
I hope at least some of this helps.
Sincerely,
Dale F. Rowe
