Ampico A woes! My older restoration (40 years) is still doing
reasonably well, however, it will not run the rolls at speed. I've
checked that the pump can maintain the specified 10-12" at 'Subdued',
20" at 'Medium', but is somewhat under the 27-30" at 'Brilliant'.
Since the air motor governor must maintain speed even at 'Subdued',
the 10-12" of available vacuum should be sufficient -- but that's
a question.
Neither the Ampico 1919 Reference Book, nor Dave Saul, nor Art Reblitz
adequately pictures or explains the operation of the governor (which
means that it's trivial, I suppose). Reblitz mentions a celluloid
speed control slot which may have failed but I'd hope the restorer
had taken care of it. The same sources do not adequately show the
distribution of vacuum at the pump distributor; I suppose it's possible
that the governor receives unregulated vacuum from the pump while the
expression stuff receives vacuum downstream from the spill.
Since it appears possible to drop the drawer, leaving it tubed, to
access the motor governor, I'm stealing myself for that adventure.
But I'd like to know more about how things work to better diagnose
beforehand!

[ The 'Tempo' lever adjusts the flow of air from the air motor. If
[ the air motor has no leaks then its speed is porportional to the air
[ flow. Have you checked for leakage of the air motor pneumatics?
