Seek Ampico Stack for Marshall & Wendell Upright
By Bill Chapman

Faced with restoring my Marshall & Wendell upright stack which was
glued with large amounts of white glue, I am now seeking a replacement.
The needed stack is 56 inches wide. I attempted to remove a couple of
pneumatics only to have the pneumatic split badly.

The time required to remove the white glue from the supporting deck
board was 25 minutes. With 83 pneumatics to go, it looks like 34 hours
of scraping and patching! Then there is the matter of making new
pneumatics and positioning them on the deck.

I am open to suggestions, but it looks like there is no short cut to
cleaning the deck boards. The deck board is not square-sided, making
it almost impossible to send through a planer.

The piano has a tone which I like very much. The hammers have remained
soft in spite of the desert desiccation. I would not change the hammers
even though showing considerable use.

I have Ampico stack taken from a small grand that is only 50-3/8 inches
wide. While it is very clean regarding glue, it is far too short to
substitute for the original stack.

Bill Chapman - in sunny La Quinta, California; 85 deg. F. today.
