Hot Glue vs. PVA and PVC-E
By Nicholas Simons

Many thanks to Ralph Nielsen yesterday for his correction to my
posting regarding the true nature of Resin-W wood glue. As I said
in my posting, I had trawled the Internet and been unable to determine
the nature of the various Resin-W varieties.

After my posting I was sent a set of data sheets of this glue by
a kind MMDer. These show that both the standard Resin-W and the
weatherproof variety are 'Modified PVAc' glues, with the latter being
described as a crosslinking PVA adhesive. My experiment therefore
showed the difference between the standard and weatherproof varieties,
and did not include PVC-E.

I am unable to test PVC-E glue as I am unaware of any trade names of
this type in Great Britain. This does not bother me as there is no
place in my workshop for such a glue.

As far as gluing rubber cloth to pneumatics boards and then the
assembled pneumatic to the main stack, this is easy with hot glue.
Hot glue has the ideal characteristics for this job, in that it gels
quickly allowing the pneumatic to be covered and left on the bench
immediately after wrapping the cloth around the boards. No holding
or clamping is necessary.

After about 30 minutes, when the glue is nicely gelled but not yet
hardened it is easy to simply run a scalpel around the boards to
remove excess cloth which will allow a good flat to flat joint to be
made against the stack. An interleaf of paper or leather should be
used here as per the original.
