Assessing Fire and Smoke Damage
By David Dewey

Hi all, I thought the group might be able to give me some advice.
While I've been around pianos for decades, this is a new one for me.
A local church was hit by an arsonist and their Yamaha G-5 grand was
subjected to much smoke (no heat, apparently). The Cleanrite folks
claim the smoke is acidic and has ruined the piano.

I looked at it today and, while it is covered in smoke soot, the action
works fine, the piano has not lost its tuning, there is no sign of any
water damage (it wasn't near the fire itself) -- just a collection of
fine soot on and in the piano. The strings do look slightly rusty, but
I noticed this condition is even under the dampers, so I suspect they
were this way before the fire. The church is not heated during the
week, so humidity levels likely get high at times.

So, I believe a good cleaning and action regulation and the piano will
be good. But, am I missing something? Like, is there possibly hidden
damage to the bass string cores? The Cleanrite folks want to junk it!

Thanks,
David Dewey
