Player Piano Compositions on YouTube
By Walter Tenten

Hello MMD, in Digest 2010.06.06 I informed you about Nancarrow's
50 "Studies for Player Piano" uploaded to YouTube by GSM honorary
president Juergen Hocker. Meanwhile he has been busy with a similar
effort regarding player piano compositions by composers like
Strawinsky, Hindemith, Antheil, Ligeti, Marc-André Hamelin and others.

Starting in 1920, composers exploited the expanded capabilities of
player pianos with respect to tempo and polyphony and wrote
compositions not playable by hand for these instruments. Strawinsky
and Hindemith ranked among the first that realized and took care of
these new features.

Since the year 1950 Conlon Nancarrow created his famous 50 studies,
leading towards a renaissance of the player piano in international
concert halls. Following Nancarrow's style, younger composers became
interested in player pianos and were looking for new ways.

All compositions, the note rolls of which are in the possession of
Juergen Hocker, were recorded and are now presented to the public
at YouTube. Access is best accomplished via this link:

Best regards from Germany
