Wurlitzer Pianino in Clara Baldwin Rail Car
By Charles Davis
Hello MMDers. I just saw a television program presented on KCET
public TV by Huell Hauser visiting the Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar
California. Huell gave us a tour of a Pullman Palace private railroad
car built in 1912 and purchased by Clara Baldwin when she was about 65
years 'young'. This car has the original number 100 and the original
name of "California" on it and has been completely restored by the
Nethercut artisans to its original brand-new condition and it is a
beautiful sight to behold.
The docent who found this car originally in Massachusetts (rescuing it
within a month of it being scrapped) and the collection manager showed
the Pianino (believed to be the original) playing during the credits
at the end of the program and said that this was found in Pennsylvania,
purchased from a musical instrument collector. I was wondering if this
came from someone in the mechanical music world.
If someone has any more information on this instrument I'm sure that it
would add to the groups' knowledge of this world of instruments playing
some of the 'Happiest Music on Earth'.
Thanks in advance from
