Bernt Damm asked, "Is there an equivalent in Australia to the Player
Piano Company (PPCo) plastic glue?" While I can not speak specifically
to the subject of Australian adhesives, I think "Aleene's Original Tacky
Glue" may be essentially the same stuff. The regular price of a
4-ounce bottle is $1.99 in USA.
I suspect that PPCo had something specially bottled rather than
compounding something original. I've been intending to do comparative
tests, but have not gotten to them yet. Some on-line glue reviews say
of Aleene's mixture:
"This is the original tacky glue, a white glue, dries clear &
flexible, crafts, hobbies and household repairs, not for washable
fabrics, great for kids, safe & non toxic."
"Aleene's Fast Grab Tacky Glue is a useful PVA glue (polyvinyl
acetate or white) if you have objects that tend to slip with regular
glues. It will grab onto materials that tend to slip or fall away and
can't be held or clamped easily... The tackiness can be annoying if
you are used to sliding objects into their final position or if you get
glue on your hands."
"Pros - Holds bulky items well, Dries flexible, Reasonably priced,
Good quality product, Easy to use. Cons - Messy to work with, Dries slow"
If this material is functionally equivalent, it has the advantage of
being sold in "craft" departments at many stores, including, I think,
Michaels, JoAnne, and Walmart in North America. That makes it possible
to run out and buy it, and to be pretty sure it is fresh and not
subject to seasonal shipping restrictions. I'm pretty sure there are
Australian distributors, and similar products may be in arts & crafts
stores in other parts of the world.
