Repairing Old Piano Rolls
By John Taber

Hello MMD -- On my last posting about roll repair [100519 MMDigest]
I said I used Goo Gone Xtreme for removing Scotch tape from rolls.
Since then, they changed the formula, and now it dissolves the tape
also, leaving a mess of slush to clean up. I have gone back to using
marine finish thinner, that will easily remove the tape only. Then
I use the Goo Gone Xtreme as it will easily remove the tape glue.

Be sure the job is done over the plate glass, keeping the roll less
than 1/2" from the edge. That way the remover will soak under the tape.
Use Viva (pick a size) paper towels. Take a section and fold in half
the long way and roll it up (I roll it up on a king size marker pen)
then slide the marker out and flatten it down. This makes a good
cleaning pad. Keep the glue soaked, and use the pad in tiny swirling
motions. Keep turning the end of the pad as it gets used to keep it
clean.

Finally, swipe the whole area with fresh solvent and a clean pad. Lift
the end of the roll up and gently swipe the underside _and_ the glass.
Lay it back down and dry with a hair dryer. Now it's ready for repair.
