To add a bit of "rubber band" roll history to this subject. I was
fortunate to be able to purchase the remainder of the Joseph Tushinsky
Ampico roll collection several years ago. Upon receiving the rolls,
which were stored in some type of tin metal boxes, every roll had a
brittle, dried rubber band that was stuck to the fragile paper roll.
I believe what happened was that when the rubber bands were fresh,
there were no problems, but as the rolls were stored, sold to Japan,
then returned years later, somewhere along this journey they were
stored in a very hot place. As a result, all the rubber bands were
brittle and were stuck to the roll.
The only effective way I could get the rubber bands off the paper roll
was to carefully scrape them off with my fingernail. This of course
was an extreme situation due to the heat issue. To this day, I still
cannot remove all remnants of the rubber bands, and some of the leader
on the rolls were damaged in the removal process.
Needless to say, rubber bands are not good for long term storage in
unsatisfactory storage conditions.
